Our Mission
To provide the opportunity for special needs children to attend and have a real, live outdoor camp experience, complete with the fun and sense of accomplishment of outdoor camp activities, new friendships, confidence and spirit building, all under the direct supervision of caring, qualified, professional, para-educators and staff members.
Barry Feldman
Barry Feldman brings dynamic programming and extensive experience to Camp Blue Sky. He is a seasoned pubic school professional, camp counselor and businessman. For the past 10 years Barry has been a highly respected public school administrator, currently serving as assistant principal in the Huron Valley School District where he is actively involved with the hiring and evaluating of professional general education and special education Para-Educators with particular comprehension of each child's needs. Here he oversees the implementation of regular education and special education curricula that are delivered to more than 1200 special needs students each day.
Barry has extensive day and overnight summer camp familiarity locally in the roles of counselor (J.C.C.) lead teacher (SCAMP camp), division leader (Tamarack camp) and most recently his eight summers as administrator (B'nai B'rith Beber Camp). At Wisconsin’s Beber Camp, where he and other generation of his family have volunteered for years, his enthusiasm and genuine love for kids showed on daily basis. Barry has hands on day to day operations experience as program director, logistics coordinator and direct involvement with the ACA accreditation process.
In addition, Barry managed two businesses: Emergency One – an American Red Cross endorsed “on-site” first aid and CPR instruction service; and Alert Road Testing – the State of Michigan licensure examiner company that solely determines licensing eligibility for any person seeking a Michigan driver’s license.
Darlene Garrison
Darlene brings a thoughtful, caring enthusiasm and organization to Camp Blue Sky that supports and encourages students toward independence. She is the assistant director of the Huron Valley Special Olympics program having worked as an active year-round member with the program for the past eleven years. Darlene works with the program directors at the county, regional and state levels to plan the event. She co-ordinates the day to day needs of each individual athlete and plans and organizes fundraisers for the Special Olympics non-profit organization. Almost 100 athletes compete in the Annual District Track and Field Event which she plans and for which she organizes over 250 volunteer parents, coaches and athletes with whom she’s built strong relationships.
For the past 13 years, Darlene has worked as a certified and respected Para-Educator to support students in the special education and general education classes in the Huron Valley School District. In one-on-one, small group and larger group settings, she has works with students with a variety of disabilities, including physical impairments, cognitive impairments, autistic impairments, emotional impairments and learning disabilities. She is trained in Sensory Integration, Love and Logic, CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention), Life Space Crisis Intervention and CPR/ First Aid. Her patience, professionalism and positive energy connect to people of all ages.
